A fantastic place to unwind and enjoy nature while being pampered

We stayed for 5 nights at Villa Gangananda, a very comfortable villa situated at a beautiful spot on the (large) Madampe lake. We particularly enjoyed taking the villa's stand-up paddle and canoes out in the early mornings and evenings when you can see lots of wildlife (such as the monitor lizard, sea eagle), and the lake is often flat like a mirror. One great thing about the villa's swimming pool is that it is shaded in the afternoon, so it is perfect for watching sunsets while taking a cool drink (you can order from the house's menu and the staff will them fresh). In the evening we had dinner at the villa, made by the resident cook, which was very nice, not to mention very convenient. There are three staff members who live on the property in a separate house, and they were most helpful and discrete. The villa manager Sampath comes around every morning to check if things are OK and offered great help with our excursions. The villa is a short ride away from some of the most beautiful beaches in the south. We also booked a boat tour on the lake (the boat belongs to the villa) one morning, which was great. I had two massages by a very professional masseur who came to the villa, and I can definitely recommend him. All in all Gangananda is a fantastic place to unwind and enjoy beautiful nature while being pampered. We loved it.

Spectacular Sri Lanka - Family Holiday

We took a punt and booked this villa after seeing it on TripAdvidor, not really daring to hope it’d be as stunning as the photos. We were utterly bowled over from the moment we arrived at Colombo airport. We were met by a driver who welcomed us and drove us the approx. 2hr journey to Villa We arrived at the busy Colombo airport amazed to see their duty free includes large electrical items and car parts. Feeling slightly overwhelmed we were relieved to be met in arrivals by a taxi and driven the approx. 2hrs to Villa Ganganada. This was arranged for us by the owner Martin who provided our flight details to Sampath the house manager so he could organise transport for us. The 6 of us - 2 adults, 3 teens and a child and were greeted at the villa by Sampath and his team of 4 ‘House Boys’ with refreshing glasses of fresh mango juice. This set the scene for how our 10 day holiday was to be. Perfect! Sampath and the boys worked discreetly and tirelessly in the background to ensure our ever need was met. The house is as impressive as the pictures were and the pool as clear, clean and warm as a bath. The garden was immaculate complete with a lake. The House Boys took us on a wildlife safari tour of the lake, in the boat belonging to the house. The lake has water monitors and a few crocodiles and the surrounding woodland is visited by monkeys. How my boys squealed with excitement at seeing huge land lizards taking a stroll across the lawn towards the lake. 1 house boy is permanently based in an annex next to the villa 24/7, you can ring an intercom bell to ask for anything you need. The other 3 boys are chefs, gardeners housekeepers and they come and go from the villa depending on what work is required each day. The pool, house and garden are cleaned daily. Laundry is done whenever requested. You can order 3 meals a day plus snacks, all cooked within the annex. The food is truly outstanding, from traditional Sri Lankan dishes to snacks and fruit platters. This food is provided at such great value and is of the highest quality. We pretty much decided to eat mostly at the villa. There is a menu to make your selection from and you let them know what time to have the food ready for. This runs smoothly, and the no washing up afterwards is a bonus! There is also a kitchen which is for the guests to use. There’s plenty to do in the surrounding areas, tea plantation, spice garden, moonstone factory, mask factory, scuba diving, turtle hatchery, surf school. Further afield is safaris, elephant orphanages and whale watching. Sampath will negotiate pricing as well as book the tour and organise all transport in your behalf. We found Sri Lanka to be beautiful, historical and interesting. The people were deeply honourable, kind and industrious. We never felt unsafe or taken advantage of by anybody we encountered. We were sad to leave the island, the villa and our new friends when we left yesterday. Tears were shed. We booked our next holiday back here before we even left. I have no hesitation in recommending Villa Ganganada to you.

VILLA GANGANDA – WHERE CONTEMPORARY MEETS ANTIQUITY

Ambalangoda is known for its serene beaches and its local cultures. Inside this village and on the banks of Lake Madampe lies this grandesque Villa Gangananda. At first when you cross the train tracks and drive through narrow alleyways there is no way you will believe that such a huge villa lies nestled deep inside. Once you reach the gates of Gangananda, on the left, there’s a white statue of Buddha to greet you and on the right is a small family owned convenience store for your everyday items. On entering the gates, there is a pretty small door that opens to a huge interior. At first glance I thought we were at the hotel reception. However, only after repeated convincing did I admit that it was the hall. Look to the left and you will see the vast lake Madampe that stretches from your villa to the horizon overseeing your own swimming pool. There are three bedrooms all spacious and accommodating. Two rooms have a king sized bed and open bathrooms and one has a queen sized bed with a closed bathroom. The hall extended to a kitchen that was well equipped with equipment, crockery and cutlery. In addition to this, there was an unlimited supply of filtered drinking water, tea and coffee. In addition bath towels and complementary laundry facilities are also available. The house is directly connected to a servant’s quarters where the food was made hot and they were available to help us at anything and everything we needed. We had to inform all our food requirements at-least 4 hours before so that fresh food is prepared. There was also a lounging area just for chilling and spending quality time with your family. In the morning you could go out and sit by the swimming pool, read or swim or just walk about in the lawn. The dining table outside provided a very naturalistic touch to our breakfasts and lunches with the occasional view of fishermen fishing in the lake. In the evening, you could move back into the house and sit there without sacrificing the beautiful view outside because of a glass partition. The breakfast was complimentary and we could choose either the local cuisine or a continental breakfast, both equally delicious and mouthwatering. We decided to try both over the course of our stay. The Sri Lankan breakfast included Hoppers, String Hoppers along with a fish, meat or vegetable curry, Pol Sambol with tea or coffee. The continental breakfast had freshly baked bread with butter and house made jam and marmalade which was something to definitely die for, along with a fresh fruit platter. We also had a choice of made to order eggs. We had lunch mostly elsewhere since we were busy exploring Galle approx. 30 kms. away from our place of stay and other places around Ambalangoda. As for dinner we usually had rice, bread or Coconut Roti, with a vegetable and non veg curry which was mostly fresh prawns, which as caught that day. Every veg curries although they looked the same (due to being made with coconut milk) as well as the non veg curries were distinctive in taste. All in all, even though we were in a foreign country, we never missed our local food. The service was prompt and really good. Our food was made and served on time regardless of what time we gave. Special thanks to Chef Vidula, Gayan and Tharidu. They are young chaps and very helpful who were comparatively easier to communicate with, than the locals. They could cook, clean, sail a boat which they did when we took a boat trip through the whole lake which was quite huge. Our review would be incomplete if Mr. Sampath (Manager) is not mentioned. He is always available, made all the travel and tour arrangements, including local advise and also providing excellent hospitality. By the way, free Wi-fi is also provided and there are security cameras around the villa Overall, Villa Gangananda in Ambalangoda is a perfect vacation spot for someone who is looking to actually sit back and enjoy their time in Sri Lanka

Relaxing, spacious, friendly and engaging

We had a wonderful two weeks at Gangananda. The house is spacious and modern and perfectly located on the lake. The managing team take great pride in the house's maintenance and appearance and the level of service is very high. They were wonderful with our young daughter. Breakfast is provided but we ended up having nearly all meals made for us in the property. Although it's in a great location with easy access to beaches and many sites, we were so well looked after we hardly left the apartment for the entire stay! Would highly recommend and will be returning soon.

Wonderful

The accommodation is first class and the service and food excellent yet it also has great character. Superb open air bathrooms and spacious rooms. High quality cooked breakfasts and dinner as required. We really enjoyed the pool and garden set right in the lake. They also arranged travel for us down to Hikkaduwa and Ambalangoda and the local restaurants and shops.
