Sri Lanka - the Ambalangoda Area

The ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’, Sri Lanka is a country with a rich history and culture and breathtaking scenery. The area around Ambalangoda contains some of the most beautiful palm-fringed beaches on the west coast.

Beaches

The sandy and palm fringed Urawatta beach just outside Ambalangoda is both beautiful and secluded. For surfing, the busier beaches of Hikkaduwa are only around 15 minutes away by tuk tuk.

Ambalangoda Town

Ambalangoda is a bustling town with many things to see and is regarded as the heart and soul of southern art and culture, with its gifted mask artists (see the famous mask workshop and museum), cultural dancing, historic bell tower and temple and as a centre for antiques.

Not far from the quiet beaches, the 390 hectare Madampe lake creates a unique biodiversity with a great variety of birds, wildlife, vegetation and fish. Take a boat trip and relax, whilst listening to the birds and enjoying the serenity of the lake.

Ambalangoda has both railway and bus stations and is about 13 km from the Southern Expressway (E01).

Places to Visit in the Area

Not far away can be found the longest reclining Buddha statue in South Asia, a moonstone mine, turtle and fish farms and the lively town of Hikkaduwa. Within just over 30 minutes by tuk tuk is the renowned Galle Fort UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The famous Sinharaja rainforest, the Udawalawe wildlife park and a tea estate and factory can each be reached during a one day trip.

Restaurants

For dining out in Ambalangoda, there are a number of restaurants including Sanekvin on the Galle Road, Tandoori Kitchen on Main Street and Chill Pill right on the beach. There are also numerous restaurants in the lively town of Hikkaduwa, which is just 15 minutes away by tuk tuk.

Markets

There is a daily organic fruit and vegetable market in Ambalangoda, where we buy many of the local fruits for breakfast. Every Wednesday, there is a fair at Madampagama on the Galle Road just outside Ambalangoda and every day, you will find freshly caught fish being sold on roadside stalls.

Trips and Excursions

Our villa manager will be on hand to arrange your transportation and excursions, including your airport pick-up and drop-off. We have a pool of drivers to draw on with pre-set prices. Tuk tuks are normally used for local journeys and air conditioned mini-vans for longer trips.
